SELF-CARE NOTES

The following notes apply particularly to your acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatments. They are also good recommendations any time you receive any type of healthcare treatment.

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING YOUR TREATMENT

  1. Be especially careful getting off the treatment table, stepping outside the building, and driving home. It is not unusual to feel somewhat light-headed or dizzy. Your response times may be slightly different than you are used to. You may want someone else to drive you to your next destination.
  2. Stop by the front desk to schedule your next week or two of appointments as recommended by your practitioner and to ask about any needed forms or other information.
  3. Avoid heavy exertion for the next 24 to 48 hours. Give your body time to restore energies that may have been depleted or that may be actively working to transform, strengthen and heal. DO walk outside and get fresh air-- daily when possible.
  4. After any needles have been placed in your back, wait several hours (or overnight) before bathing or showering. Avoid extremely hot or cold water. Also avoid wind, fans and open windows that blow on the back of your neck and shoulders.
  5. Drink plenty of water at room temperature or warmer for the next several days.
  6. Practice breathing deeply several times a day, especially first thing in the morning and any time you are preparing for challenging circumstances.

BETWEEN TREATMENTS

The best long-term results can be expected when you make the commitment to yourself to receive regular treatments according to the schedule your practitioner recommends. These schedules vary according to unique individual needs. For most clients it is helpful to begin with at least two weekly sessions for two or more weeks until clear improvements are observed and maintained. As progress continues, treatments can then be spaced apart more and more. Meanwhile, between treatments consider improving your lifestyle/habits by practicing the following supportive guidelines:

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, nicotine, caffeine, non-prescription drugs, and any other substances that negatively impact your system. Use the power of your treatments to clear toxic blockages these items create and to help you assimilate healthy intakes of food, air and water. Note that acupuncture may increase the affects of whatever we put in our body and can have a strong impact on how your body responds to and eals with toxins. if you find that something doesn't taste good or that unpleasant symptoms occur when you use it, chances are good that your body is warning you not to take it in at this time.
  • When possible, put time and distance between your treatment and exposure to toxic environments and/or people. Take a deep breath, stop for a moment to ground yourself, step gently into any necessarily difficult circumstances, and set a limit to the amount of time you will allow yourself to be in the presence of those stressors. As with item #1 above, give yourself permission to "just say 'No'." Allow yourself adequate time to make wise, healthy choices.
  • Choose foods and beverages that are cooked and that are room temperature or warmer. Cold interrupts proper digestion.  Raw requires overuse of important energies that need to be preserved. Cooking serves as a means to warm and pre-digest foods so that what we eat can be properly absorbed and assimilated without doing damage to the Stomach or Spleen systems.
